There are many reasons a youth runs away or is kicked out of their home, but usually it is because of intense family conflict that may or may not include physical, sexual or psychological abuse. Many children who leave home do so to protect themselve. The Coffee House Teen Shelter is Sonoma County's only shelter for runaway and homeless youth that is opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Coffee House provides safe, short-term housing, food, clothing, and counseling for runaway and homeless teens ages 12-17, and for families needing a safe harbor for their teens during times of crisis. The Drop-In Center serves three hot meals a day. Crisis intervention, counseling, and family reunification services are available. Over 95% of youth who come to the Coffee House Shelter are reunited with their parents.
The Office of Juvenile Justice
and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
estimates that there are approximately 1.7 million
runaway/thrownaway youth in the United
States - the largest group reported missing in the U.S.
Street Outreach Program 707-522-2266
The Coffee House also offers a Street Outreach Program for homeless teens and young adults aged 18-24 who can visit the Coffee House any time to receive meals, clothing, or to share their concerns with a counselor. The Outreach Team also visits homeless youth at various locations throughout the county. Our door is always open.

Within two weeks from the day a foster youth turns 18 years old, they are automatically terminated from the California foster care system. Basic resources they had counted on - food, shelter, and health care - are automatically discontinued. Tamayo House offers former foster youth and youth with severe mental illness a safe place to live, counseling, case management, job readiness training, adult mentoring, and independent living skills instruction. The goal is for each resident to have privacy and independence, yet be able to access support when they feel they need it. This is achieved through providing private rooms, but sharing kitchen/dining, recreation, and computer lab areas. Peer facility monitors provide security and stability and, together with all the Tamayo House residents, everyone helps each other to becomendependent, community-involved adults. Learn More.
